Just over three short years ago, Danny Adkins was selected superintendent of Floyd County Schools, replacing interim Steve Trimble and filling the 2017 vacancy left by former superintendent Dr. Henry Webb. Adkins’ different roles during his 26 years in education have been spent serving as Personnel Director of Pike County Schools, as a science teacher and an elementary school principal at a top performing elementary school. He drove a school bus for almost two decades, coached, served on councils and committees and was very active in the education association.
Since becoming superintendent for Floyd County Schools, Adkins has served on the Local Superintendent Advisory Council and has been selected as the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Kentucky Association of Professional Educators. Adkins received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts from Morehead State University. He attained his Rank I certification through Union College and his School Superintendent Certification at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
Adkins quickly gained attention with his signature selfies. As he visited schools, attended events and supported students and teachers, Danny Adkins would take a selfie with the individual, group or even entire gymnasium. Children, teenagers and adults would quickly lean in to be in the picture and smile. Through his selfies, Danny Adkins showed his love of people and his joy in being part of their lives. His easy smile and disarming nature made him very likable and approachable.
Chief of Communication Pam Caudill comments, “Many times when Mr. Adkins is in schools or at events, students approach him and start conversations. Seeing students at ease with the superintendent is an indication of the culture he created in our district.”
The Floyd County School of Innovation (FCSI) is considered by many to be Danny Adkins’ greatest accomplishment during his time in Floyd County Schools. FCSI Principal Christina Crase comments, “I think part of Mr. Adkins’ legacy in Floyd County is how he always exceeded expectations to make sure opportunities of all types are provided for kids, especially college and career routes. FCSI has and will continue to provide hands on opportunities for students to take charge of their futures thanks to Mr. Adkins. He focuses on the whole student and because of his support, we’ve already changed lives with some students having jobs instantly after graduating high school and with other students knowing what they want to do with their lives.”
Adkins comments, ““I was honored when I was selected as superintendent of Floyd County Schools and I am even more honored to have been a part of this incredible district. The commitment to students, the level of expectation that teachers have for themselves and the overwhelming belief in our children is something prevalent in Floyd County and something that will always remain with me. I will miss my Floyd County family and I will always be a fan of Floyd County Schools.”
Adkins will begin his new role in Woodford County Schools on July 1, 2021.
